Germany must face S.Korea without fear - Voeller 

SOGWIPO, South Korea (Reuters) - Only if they face South Korea without fear will Germany stand a chance of reaching the World Cup final, coach Rudi Voeller has said.

"The main criticism I have to make is that we didn't believe in ourselves," Voeller said of his team's defensive tactics in Friday's unimpressive 1-0 quarter-final win over the United States.

"I was shocked by that," he said, adding that such a passive attitude would be fatal in Tuesday's semi-final against the co-hosts, who advanced to the last four with a controversial penalty shootout win over Spain on Saturday.

"You can always make mistakes but you have to trust yourself," Voeller said. "If we don't do that against Korea, it will be the end for us."

The former World Cup striker, who was in the squad but did not play when Germany struggled to beat South Korea 3-2 in the first round of the 1994 finals in the United States, said a tight defence would be the key.

"We have to be compact at the back," he said. "Spain did that and Korea created few chances.

"We know our strengths are that we have a great goalkeeper in Oliver Kahn and that we are dangerous from set-pieces," he added, hinting that Germany would have a simple game plan.

Voeller, who declined to elaborate on the controversial refereeing decisions in South Korea's win over Spain, stressed that Germany's next opponents would be tough.

"They have knocked out Portugal, Italy and Spain, which says it all," he said.

"The fact that they had to play extra time twice might be a slight advantage for us but they don't look tired at all. They look like they could play tomorrow.

"There's no doubt that we have to raise the level of our game. If we can't do that we won't win."
